Two men carjacked in front of Play Dance Bar

Two Tennessee State University students were the victims of what police are calling a random carjacking in Nashville’s gay district in front of Play Dance Bar, 1519 Church Street.

The students,  age 23 and 24, were exiting Play around 1:30 a.m. on Thursday, May 15, when they were approached by two black males, each armed with a handgun. Each student was forced into his own car and drove to 3500 John A. Merritt Boulevard, where they escaped their attackers.

Metro Police are looking for two black males – one with light skin, about 5 feet 7 inches tall, who was wearing blue jeans and a black T-shirt; the other is about 5 feet 10 inches tall with dark skin and was seen wearing a black hat, black shirt and light-colored shorts. Both have their hair braided. They left the scene in a 2004 four-door silver Oldsmobile Alero stolen from one of the victims. The car has a Tennessee license plate number 726-SJG.

Police have not yet released the identity of the victims.

“One of the victims was robbed of cash and a cell phone,” said Kristin Mumford, a spokesperson for Metro Police. “The victim complied with the demands of the robber and threw his belongings on the ground. When the suspect bent over to retrieve the belongings the victim ran away.”

The other victim ran from his attacker after the vehicle came to a stop.

Mumford said if you are a victim of a carjacking to:

  • Be aware of your surroundings
  • Be the best witness you can be for the police – remember to be able to provide a good description of your attackers
  • Comply with the demands of the attacker and do not fight back unless your life is in immediate danger

Anyone with information about the robbery is urged to call North Precinct Investigations at 862-7901 or Crime Stoppers at 74-CRIME

Gender-Inclusive Universities and Student Privacy

For many students, attending university is a profound, often life-changing, transition. It is often the student’s first time living on their own without parental supervision. This lifestyle is also accompanied by a period of self-discovery, of defining and redefining a sense of personal identity largely independent of the influence of family and friends from home.

For students who are members of the LGBTQ+ community, this rite of passage can also be a deeply empowering one. Indeed, attending university may be the student’s first real opportunity to explore their gender identity in a safe, comfortable, and accepting college.

I had the opportunity to visit Mexico for an event José Cuervo was putting on, the unveiling of their premium tequila brand, Reserva de la Familia. The trip was all about tequila, how to drink it properly, how to pair it with food, and of course, visiting various points of interest in Guadalajara while tasting tequila along the way.
