Nashville GLBT Chamber July business briefs

Vanderbilt Medical Center's Office of News and Public Affairs has reorganized and promoted several staff members to new positions.

Jerry Jones, who serves on the Nashville GLBT Chamber of Commerce board of directors and is publisher of Out & About Newspaper, has been promoted to assistant director of News at Vanderbilt Medical Center.

Jones, who joined VMC in 2000, is the medical center's regional news director. He will assume a broader role in the office's media relations activities. Jones has a Bachelor of Arts degree in communications and journalism from Lipscomb University and a master's degree in public administration from Tennessee State University. He was editor of the Lipscomb student newspaper, The Babbler, and a former staff writer of the Shelbyville Times-Gazette, and The Williamson Leader.

NGLBTCC board member appointed to Mayor's green ribbon committee

Gary Gaston, who serves on the NGLBTCC board of directors, was recently appointed to Mayor Karl Dean's Green Ribbon Committee.  Co-chaired by Lipsomb University President Randy Lowry and John Ingram, chair of Ingram Industries, Inc., the committee begins meeting next month to help create a better environmental policy for Nashville.

Chamber welcomes new members

The Nashville GLBT Chamber of Commerce welcomes the following new members:

Dwayne Jenkins, founder and president of Nashville Black Pride, Inc. 
Nashville Black Pride is an annual celebration of life and culture for LGBT/Same Gender Loving African American's, their partners, families & friends. NBP is sponsored by Brothers & Sisters United Network, Inc., the states only 501c3 non profit organization. NBP is a proud member of the International Federatioin of Black Prides organization which is a collective of over 28 Black Prides across the country including Toronto & South Africa. Nashville's Black Pride is the last weekend in October.

A Nashville-based commercial and fine art photographer, Barry A. Noland specializes in outdoor location and indoor natural lighting imagery including portraits, portfolios, media packages & layouts, business images, personal images, event photography and fine art.

National Margarita Day

Gender-Inclusive Universities and Student Privacy

For many students, attending university is a profound, often life-changing, transition. It is often the student’s first time living on their own without parental supervision. This lifestyle is also accompanied by a period of self-discovery, of defining and redefining a sense of personal identity largely independent of the influence of family and friends from home.

For students who are members of the LGBTQ+ community, this rite of passage can also be a deeply empowering one. Indeed, attending university may be the student’s first real opportunity to explore their gender identity in a safe, comfortable, and accepting college.

José Cuervo's Reserva de la Familia agave fields
