Lucky’s has open drag auditions

Lucky’s Garage will hold open drag auditions for a new drag troupe and show, to be called Lucky’s La Cage. The auditions will be held in the form of a talent contest, during which winners will be selected by audience applause.

Finalists from the contest rounds will become permanent cast members of Lucky’s La Cage and will perform weekly Saturday night shows. The preliminary rounds begin Friday Nov. 3 at 11 p.m. and will continue each Friday during the month of November. The first official Lucky’s La Cage show will be Saturday, December 1.

“This is a bit of a turnaround for us,” said Tony Daniel, Lucky’s co-owner. “We hadn’t originally planned to do shows on a regular basis at Lucky’s. However, the feedback we’re getting from our customers overwhelmingly indicates that a show is what they really want.”

“But we’re Lucky’s,” he added with a grin, “So we’re going to do this a little differently than everyone else.”

The contest is open to anyone interested in performing with a drag troupe. Entertainers can be seasoned performers or amateurs. Audience members will then choose their favorite entertainers to join the cast, so performers are encouraged to bring their fan bases to support them.

“This is not just for serious drag entertainers and illusionists,” added Daniel. “We’re open to all kinds of entertainers for our show, including camp drag and drag kings. If you think you can wow a crowd, we want you on stage.”

“I’d love to include some camp drag,” said T. Allen Morgan, Lucky’s co-owner. “It’s not something you see very much of here in Nashville and I miss it from the clubs I used to frequent in L. A., Atlanta and San Francisco. And I’d also like to see different type of entertainers, including camp and comic performers. We have a chance to do something unique with this, and I hope we can accomplish that--but we want it to be fun most of all.”

Lucky’s owners acknowledge that they have customers that like the current format as is and may be put off by the addition of a show. For this reason, they say, there will be no show on Friday nights.

Performers interested in competing should be prepared to perform two songs and need to provide their own music on CD. Performers should also come in costume and are encouraged to interact with the audience prior to performing. Registrants are encouraged to arrive early to secure a performance slot. A final line up will be set by 10:30 p.m. on the night of the contests. The contest is open to amateurs and entertainers not currently under contract for other shows.

For questions about the contest and Lucky’s La Cage, visit Lucky’s during business hours and ask for Tony Daniel or send an email to tony@luckysnashville.com.

Prospective Lucky’s patrons can sign up for an email list that will notify them of the club’s weekly and monthly events automatically. For complete details about the club or to sign up for the email list visit the website at www.luckysnashville.com.

Nurse Practitioner Ari Kravitz

When I started medical transition at 20 years old, it was very difficult to get the care I needed for hormone replacement therapy because there are very few providers trained in starting hormones for trans people, even though it’s very similar to the hormones that we prescribe to women in menopause or cisgender men with low testosterone.

I hope more providers get trained in LGBTQ+ healthcare, so they can support patients along their individual gender journey, and provide the info needed to make informed decisions about their body. I’ve personally seen my trans patients find hope and experience a better quality of life through hormone replacement therapy.
