En esta edición de “Out and About,” estamos muy orgullosos de presentar el primero de una serie de artículos mensuales en español.

Esperamos que esta serie de artículos, iniciada por miembros del grupo “Tennessee Equality Project” o TEP, llegue a los lectores latinos de “Out and About,” con el fin de informar a los miembros de la comunidad GLBT (gay, lésbica, bisexual, transgénera) sobre los sucesos relevantes.  El artículo de este mes discute el nuevo proyecto de TEP que trae las metas de TEP a la comunidad latina.

Las letras TEP forman una sigla que tiene una importancia fundamental para los habitantes del estado de Tennessee:  Tennessee Equality Project, una organización cuyo propósito es el de avanzar y proteger los derechos civiles de todos los ciudadanos gay, lésbicos, bisexuales y transgéneros (GLBT)  y sus familias. 

Intentamos lograr este propósito de la siguiente manera:  primero, aplicamos la presión política en la Asamblea General de Tennessee para fomentar la legislación que favorezca a nuestra  comunidad; segundo, representamos los intereses de los miembros de la comunidad GLBT que han sido  víctimas de un crimen de odio, o sea, la discriminación. Para alcanzar ambas metas, trabajamos en equipo con los legisladores, la policía y los líderes de la comunidad para mejorar la vida de los ciudadanos GLBT en Tennessee.
   
Las letras TEP también forman una sigla que tiene una importancia, primodial, para la comunidad latina de Tennessee.  TEP también significa  transformación, equilibrio y progreso. Durante los próximos meses, la comunidad latina va a tener la oportunidad de conocer a TEP a fondo a través de unas iniciativas que se llevarán a cabo en los centros de población latina de Tennessee. 

Escucharán y leerán nuestro nombre en los medios de difusión que sirven a la comunidad latina.   El mensaje que vamos a mandar, a través de estos medios,  es que el Tennessee Equality Project existe para fomentar la transformación, el equilibrio y el progreso para la comunidad GLBT latina.

La Transformación.  TEP trabaja con el gobierno estatal para que apruebe leyes que favorezca la comunidad GLBT. También luchamos contra la legislación que la perjudique. 

El Equilibrio.  Nuestra lucha está al nivel legislativo.  Por medio de nuestra representante realizamos nuestras metas políticas a través de la presión política.   Trabajamos en equipo con los miembros de la Asamblea General para  alcanzar nuestros propósitos.

El Progreso.  Buscamos la mejor manera para que el estado de Tennessee llegue a tener la reputación de un lugar que le da la bienvenida a todo ciudadano GLBT.  Queremos que todo ciudadano GLBT de Tennessee viva una vida segura y que todos los miembros de la comunidad GLBT puedan realizar sus sueños, viviendo en una sociedad acogedora.

Ser latino y GLBT en Tennessee es  sin duda,  un enorme desafío. Ser miembro de dos minorías, una cultural y otra sexual, representa un reto difícil y único. Con una comprensión de esta difícil situación, la organización Tennessee Equality Project (TEP)  desea  alargar la mano a esta comunidad.  El director de esta iniciativa, Todd Hughes, comenta “La población latina en Tennessee aumenta más y más y queremos establecer una relación con esta comunidad con el propósito de informar e involucrar a cada persona en las metas y eventos de TEP.”

Lo más importante de esta iniciativa es la participación de los miembros de la comunidad latina de Tennessee.  No importa si uno es ciudadano GLBT o no, necesitamos su participación y apoyo para poder seguir adelante.  ¿Cómo puede uno participar?  La manera más fácil es hacerse voluntario de TEP.  El proyecto Transformación Equilibrio y Progreso tendrá muchas facetas y uno puede donar la cantidad de tiempo que uno quiera.

English Translation

The letters TEP represent something of importance to the people of Tennessee:  Tennessee Equality Project, an organization whose objective is to advance and to protect the rights of all GLBT citizens and their families. 

TEP strives to meet its goals in two important ways:  first, through the political process in the General Assembly in order to advance legislation that favors our community; second, by representing the interests of GLBT citizens who are victims of a hate crime.

The letters TEP also represent something of importance to the Latino community in Tennessee.  TEP means transformation, equilibrium and progress.  During the next few months, the Latino community will have the opportunity to get to know TEP through a series of initiatives that we will undertake in the places where you live.  You will hear our name on the radio and read about us in the press. 

The message that we’re going to send is that TEP exists in order to advance transformation, equilibrium and progress for GLBT Latinos.

Transformation.  TEP works in conjunction with the state government to pass legislation that favor the GLBT community.  We also fight against legislation that might hurt GLBT latinos.

Equilibrium.  Our struggle is at the legislative level.  Through the work of our lobbyist, we realize our goals through positive political action.  We work as a team with the members of the General Assembly to reach our goals. 

Progress.  We search for the best route to make certain that Tennessee has the reputation of being a welcoming place for all GLBT citizens.  It is our desire that all GLBT citizens in Tennessee live a life that is safe, being able to realize their dreams in a welcoming environment .

Being GLBT and Latino in Tennessee is, without a doubt, a great challenge.  Being a member of two minorities, one cultural and one sexual, represents a difficult and unique challenge.  Undertanding this situation, TEP desires to reach out to the Latino community.  The director of this initiative, Todd Hughes, states that “the Latino population in Tennessee is quickly growing and TEP wants to establish a strong relationship with this community with the goal of serving as a source of information and motivating Tennessee’s Latinos in the events and the goals of TEP.” 

The most important part of this initiative is your participation.  It doesn’t matter if you are GLBT or not, we need your help and support in order to move forward.  How can you participate?  The easiest way is to become a TEP volunteer. 

TEP’s Latino initiative will be multifaceted and you can give to the community as much or as little as you like.  We need translators, interpreters, media links, volunteers to represent TEP in get togethers and in meetings with the General Assembly.
