NASHVILLE, Tenn. (July 16, 2020) - It’s no secret that the queer community has a lot more time on its hands (pardon the pun) in recent months. People in isolation are having to think of more creative ways to pleasure themselves for their sexual health. Here’s a breakdown of what Nashville is doing, when they’re doing it, and the best and most healthy ways to get your freak on.

According to Pornhub.com, Nashville ranks 22nd in cities across the globe that watch the most porn. The average viewer watches for approximately 10 minutes and 33 seconds. The gay porn traffic share in Nashville is 3.8%, while Tennessee rests at 3.3%. But that’s not even the most interesting part.

41% of viewers of gay content on the website are female. Not only do women view a lot of lesbian porn, but the second most popular category among women is gay porn featuring men.

We should note that both gay and non-gay viewing on Pornhub in these categories is higher in Nashville than the national average.

Pornhub.com reports that traffic changes during the crisis became noticeable much later in the United States, as it joined Europe with quarantines, social distancing and work-at-home efforts encouraged or required by most states. Even with some states relaxing their quarantines and allowing some people to return to work, Pornhub’s traffic has stayed much higher than it was in February.

Of Pornhub’s Top 20 cities (making up over 16 percent of all worldwide searches), seven cities in the United States (New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago, Houston, Dallas, Washington, D.C. and Atlanta) make the cut.

Dating and social platform for gay, bi men and trans people ROMEO said that 57 percent of their users surveyed say they are in a positive mood, while 40 percent admit they are “very VERY horny”. The country with the highest labito on the site’s radar? India at 56 percent. 70 percent overall say they are completely abstaining from sex, with Italy and Spain leading the abstinence at 86 percent. One in 5 users worldwide say they have lost their mojo, with Spanish users reporting the least interest in sex at 40 percent.

“Masturbation and pleasuring yourself is decidedly the best way to eliminate the risk of getting infected with or transmitting COVID-19,” MPact Global Action for Gay Men’s Health and Rights said on their website. “Masturbation can be as sweaty and kinky as you like.”

MPact recommends to make masturbation fun by paying attention to other body parts such as the perineum (the area between the genitals and anus) which is full of nerve endings. They also say it doesn’t hurt to caress one’s own nipples.

“The rest is in your hands...literally,” Mpact added.

The New York City Health Department released a guide on May 19 advising to either masturbate, sext or consider safe sex with a roommate, but cautioned to wash your hands (and any sex toys) with soap and water for at least 20 seconds before and after sex.

With all of the alone time and the obvious increase in pornographic viewing, should members of the community be cautious of “porn addiction”? First, examine the term. According to one expert, “porn addiction” is a metaphor, borrowing the notion of true addiction, which is physiological dependence upon a substance.

“A better term is ‘out of control sexual behavior’, in which the person feels unable to stop looking at porn, masturbating or engaging in risky behavior,” said Dr. David Yarian, PhD, 72, a licensed Psychologist and Certified Sex Therapist and Sexologist in private practice on Music Row in Nashville, Tennessee. “Feeling out of control is one measure. When any kind of behavior, whether watching porn or cheating on your partner or gambling or shopping, is having a profound negative effect upon your primary relationships or your work or self care, it’s a good idea to take a closer look at what’s going on.”

Dr. Yarian says everyone is different. For example, one person who experiences trauma may be horrified at some of the sexual behavior in porn scenes. Another trauma survivor may look at porn as a way to expose themselves to sexual experiences, thus learning about themselves and perhaps processing some of their pain.

Author Justin J. Lehmiller, PhD, says in his book The Psychology of Human Sexuality that the key idea behind Terror Management Theory is that “when we are reminded of our own mortality, we subconsciously alter our attitudes and behaviors to help us cope with the ‘terrifying’ prospect of our eventual death”.

Peak times for porn, according to Pornhub.com, are between Midnight-2am. A search conducted by Out & About Nashville found that “coronavirus” returned a hit of over 1600 videos on the site. Between February 20-March 16 the site reported 9,127,482 Coronavirus searches.
