O&AN Calendar of Events 5/7-5/14

If you thought last weekend's Gay May Weekend was spilling over with GLBT events, think again. From comedy to theater, we've got a whole week (and weekend) planned for you! Check it out below.

First, you can join the NGLBTCC tonight (May 7) for Mix & Mingle 2. Held in the Gulch at Bar Louie (314 11th Ave. S), The GLBT Chamber is joining forces again with the young professionals of the Nashville Area Hispanic Chamber and the American Advertising Federation-Nashville for a mixer from 5:30-7:30 p.m..

Be prepared to bust a gut May 8 at Zanie's (2025 8th Ave. S) where you can catch Girl on Girl Comedy. Part comedy, part burlesque, all good time, this laugh-fest will surely get you through any humpday blues. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased in advance or at the door. The show starts at 8 p.m.. Get a double dose of the GLBT community May 9 with the Transgender Drop-in with Vickie Davis at OutCentral (1709 Church St.). Chat with Vickie Davis, one of the leaders of the Tennessee Vals, a transgender support group here in Nashville, and a board member at OutCentral. Vickie facilitates an informal discussion for anyone that wants to talk about any and all things transgender. You can catch Vickie from 6-9 p.m..

Afterwards head over to Mad Donna's for night one of Nashville Pride's Battle of the Bands. Over two nights, local bands will compete for a chance to play on Nashville Pride's Bridgestone Main Stage. The event kicks off at 9 p.m.. Update: Battle of the Bands will only take place on Friday May 10 at 10 p.m..

Friday May 10 marks a huge night as "International Male," the first of the Torch Song Trilogy plays, makes its debut at Play Dance Bar ( 1519 Church St.). Brought to you by Jaz Dorsey and starring Veronika Electronika and Malachi Taylor, all proceeds from this production will benefit OutCentral. The show starts at 9 p.m.. Horse and hats. Jackets and jockeys. Style and solo cups. It must be none other than Steeplechase, a blossoming GLBT party tradition. Rain or shine the 72nd Runnng of the Iroquois Steeplechase is surely the place to be seen this weekend. For more information, check out our spotlight.

When I started medical transition at 20 years old, it was very difficult to get the care I needed for hormone replacement therapy because there are very few providers trained in starting hormones for trans people, even though it’s very similar to the hormones that we prescribe to women in menopause or cisgender men with low testosterone.

I hope more providers get trained in LGBTQ+ healthcare, so they can support patients along their individual gender journey, and provide the info needed to make informed decisions about their body. I’ve personally seen my trans patients find hope and experience a better quality of life through hormone replacement therapy.
