According to one n ten, this marks the organization’s eighth award in the past four years. Past honors include Service by A Woman for Kado Stewart, Service by a Man for Stacey Jay Cavaliere (pictured above), Leader of a Nonprofit for Linda Elliott and Charity Event for Fresh Brunch..
Echo caught up with Elliott, one n ten executive director, following the April 9 awards ceremony and here's what she had to say:
Echo: Tell readers a little bit about the programs through which your mission of serving LGBTQ youth and young adults is carried out.
Elliott: We operate the Central Phoenix Youth Center and satellite locations in Glendale, Tempe, South Phoenix, Mesa and Scottsdale. We have four pillars of programs and services:
Education. Our Q High online high school diploma program and the Youth Education and Success (Y.E.S.) program that provides workforce development programs that enable youth to prepare for employment and advancement.
Health and Wellness. Weekly healthcare provided by Phoenix Children’s Hospital Crews’n Healthmobile, 20 hours of behavioral health counseling available every week at the Youth Center, daily meals provided by St Mary’s Food Bank, suicide and HIV prevention programming.
Housing. Promise of a New Day supportive housing program – 26 housing units for youth ages 18 to 24, case management, transportation, financial literacy and life skill training.
Empowerment Programming. OUTdoors Camp, visual arts, music, poetry and performance, communication skills, storytelling and athletics.
Echo: What would you say to someone reading this who wants to become involved (volunteer or donate) but doesn't know where to start?
Elliott: I would ask them to visit our website at onenten.org to get a better idea of our programs and services, then call Mike Schneider (602-279-0894) to discuss volunteer opportunities that may interest you, including our Mentor Program. You can donate on our site and even become a sustaining (monthly) donor.

Echo: How much of your calendar year goes into fundraising? How much goes into event planning?
Elliott: I would say 10 percent of my calendar goes into each.
Echo: What's the best advice you've ever received?
Elliott: Your integrity is everything. If you lose it, it can be very difficult to get it back.
Echo: What's the best advice you have to give?
Elliott: Give 110 percent to everything you do.
Echo: What new and exciting things can we expect to see from one n ten between now and the 2016 Echo Readers' Choice Awards?
Elliott: More satellite locations, expanded supportive housing program and expanded educational opportunities.
Echo: Where is the best way to stay up to date with one n ten?
Elliott: Facebook and Twitter.
Echo: Is there anyone you'd like to thank? Shoutouts you'd like to make?
Elliott: The staff of one n ten are the heart and soul of the agency. They make one n ten the safe haven it is for LGBTQ youth and provide the programming they love.
