Come one, come all

At the corner of Eclectic and Nostalgic, just past Modern-Contemporary Ave. and Art Deco Street, is the latest addition to Church Street's thriving bar scene.

Canvas Lounge, which celebrates its grand opening on Thursday, Dec. 2, sets itself apart from the current bars available in downtown Nashville.

"I think the great thing about Canvas is that it's conducive to good conversation," says patron Nick Arnold. "It's not a 'hookup bar,' but the atmosphere definitely allows you to meet someone worthwhile."

And this is exactly the atmosphere that owner Darek Tanner wanted. Tanner, a former staple at Music Row's leading musical venue Tin Roof, would prefer his new business to not be labeled as a gay or straight bar, but more as an establishment with a 'friends and family friendly' reputation that will satisfy an expectation of a brilliant experience.

"I want it to be a home-like feeling where anyone can come and be comfortable," he says. "There's nothing over the top."

The location is approximately 3,800 square feet with a capacity of 85. The venue opens to a long bar with ample seating, and continues back with booths, duel-sided stools with tables, and long style benches.

Further decorative oddities include barber chairs for patrons to lounge, two vintage phone booths designed for private cell phone conversations, plenty of quirky artwork to please the eye, and a clear garage door that enters into the smoking area.

Tanner intended for the lighting to be ambient and warm: the ceiling is lined with several fixtures that can only be described as Christian-Goth; however, they're original, vintage lights from the church that he attended as a child. Tanner obtained them when the building was being demolished, and incorporated them into his unique vision for his business.

The lounge offers a small menu served between the hours of 4-10 p.m. Choice dishes include the Pretzel Bread Chicken Breast Sandwich and a selection of homemade pizzas. Canvas also hosts a DJ who spins an eclectic mix of music on Thursday-Saturday nights.

Tanner believes that Canvas is an alternative to, and not a replacement for, the existing businesses on Music City's most gay-friendly street.

"I'm happy about being on Church Street, to be with the other clubs, and to make Church Street a destination," Tanner said. "I have a sincere desire to add to and complement the current clubs here."

Hours of operation for Canvas Lounge are Tuesday-Sunday from 4 p.m.- 3 a.m. Happy hour runs daily from 4-10 p.m., offering half-price well drinks and domestic beers. Their website (http://canvaslounge.net/) will be available beginning this month.

by Spectrum Medical Care Center

Nurse Practitioner Ari Kravitz

When I started medical transition at 20 years old, it was very difficult to get the care I needed for hormone replacement therapy because there are very few providers trained in starting hormones for trans people, even though it’s very similar to the hormones that we prescribe to women in menopause or cisgender men with low testosterone.

I hope more providers get trained in LGBTQ+ healthcare, so they can support patients along their individual gender journey, and provide the info needed to make informed decisions about their body. I’ve personally seen my trans patients find hope and experience a better quality of life through hormone replacement therapy.
