Wickedly Delightful

The people of Oz are coming to Kansas (Kansas City, actually, but close enough) in the touring production of the Tony-winning musical “Wicked”. Learn about the beginnings of the Wicked Witch of the West and her adventures in Oz during performances at the Music Hall through Dec. 6.
With an imaginative story and unforgettable music, “Wicked” is already as much of a classic as its predecessor, “The Wizard of Oz”.
Based on the bestselling book by Gregory Maguire, “Wicked” tells the incredible journey of Elphaba (Marcie Dodd) and Glinda (Helene Yorke), during which they become roommates in school and eventually become known as The Wicked Witch and Glinda, the Good Witch.
There is much more to Elphaba than you’d think. Her “wicked” intentions are good, and only Glinda really understands her. They are two friends who have both been labeled in society and are playing out the characters the Wizard and others have labeled them.
The musical numbers are heartfelt, such as “For Good,” where Elphaba and Glinda say what turn out to be their final goodbyes before Elphaba is surprised with a bucket of water and a little girl named Dorothy. The song “Popular” is witty and funny, with Glinda doing a makeover of Elphaba. “Defying Gravity,” a fantastic Broadway song, sums up the story of “Wicked”, with Elphaba transforming herself into the Witch we all grew up knowing.
“Wicked” is a beautiful and funny production, with costumes and sets that bring the world of Oz to life. The actors are all fantastic and acting as if they will never have a chance to be on stage again. It’s easy to relate to this journey of life and love in Oz. If you see any Broadway show at all, see “Wicked”.
