She has a long history in women’s and GLBTQI communities. She is a co-founder of the Nurse Manifest Project, a Web-based effort nursemanifest.com to inspire grassroots action by nurses to shape the future of nursing and health care.
She also is the founding editor of Advances in Nursing Science and has written articles and books that address feminism in nursing, nursing knowledge development and caring approaches in nursing education.
She is co-author of the recent online text and continuing education program titled “LGBTQ Cultures: What Health Care Professionals Need to Know about Sexual and Gender Diversity.”
Chinn will be the keynote speaker at “Culture is More Than Ethnicity: A Challenge for Health Care Providers,” from 5 to 8 p.m. in Nursing Annex room 155.
Chinn will launch the program with her presentation about GLBTQI best practices to raise awareness of the many cultural issues, such as the meaning of family, language issues, awareness of stigma and social discrimination, that can impact the quality of care.
She will discuss legal issues including roles of biological family members versus partners in health care decision making and the temptation and consequences of making general assumptions about this often-misjudged community.
She will help both health care providers and community members better understand the importance and relevance of patient information disclosures. Attendees will gain a greater understanding of the complexities of serving members of the GLBTQI community in health care settings and in various social interactions.
The main objective of the conference is to explore the relationship between lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender culture and health.

Carpenter Chair in Feminist Theology and director of the Carpenter Program in Religion, Gender and Sexuality; James Pace, D.S.N., R.N., M.Div., coordinator of the Adult Nurse Practitioner/Palliative Care Program at VUSN; and a panel from the School of Medicine’s Gay-Straight Alliance.
