Vanderbilt's Great Performances series announces 32nd season

The Sean Curran Dance Company will kick off the 32nd season of Great Performances at Vanderbilt on Sept. 21, with events featuring Anoushka Shankar, The Foundry Theatre, Jon Hendricks and others to follow.

Subscription packages for the seven-event series are available at the Sarratt Student Center. Call 322-2471 for information. Tickets for single events will be available through Ticketmaster starting Sept. 1.

Audience talk-back sessions and master classes in dance and theatre open to the public will be scheduled in conjunction with some of the events. Free previews of selected artists will be held prior to their full performances at various Nashville venues, usually the day before the full performance, through the Performance on the Move program.

Great Performances’ 2006-07 season:

Sept. 21, 7:30 p.m.
Ingram Hall
The Sean Curran Company, an acclaimed New York dance company led by Curran, an original member of the off-Broadway hit Stomp, performs its stunning marriage of virtuosity and emotion, “From the Ether, with Instinct, Aria, and Art, Song, Dance.” A dance master class is tentatively scheduled earlier that day in Memorial Auditorium.

Oct. 11, 7:30 p.m.

The Foundry Theatre, winner of eight Obie awards and three Drama Desk nominations for its unique shows, performs Major Bang, or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Dirty Bomb. A theatre master class is planned for the following day in Memorial Gym.

Nov. 14, 7:30 p.m.

RIAS Kammerchor Berlin, a chamber choir of 35 vocalists with a worldwide reputation for its performances of a cappella works and collaborations with the Berlin Philharmonic, performs.

Jan. 24, 7:30 p.m.

Andre Gingras/Korzo Productions performs CYP17, a solo dance and video show billed as “the freak show of the future,” asking what our lives will be like after gene manipulation, super athletes and alien pregnancies. Gingras has been recognized as one of the most important choreographers of his generation. A dance master class in Memorial Gym is planned for the day prior to the performance.

Feb. 14, 8 p.m.

Jon Hendricks, known as “the father of Vocalese,” the art of setting lyrics to jazz instrumental standards, and LHR Redux perform.

March 18, 6:30 p.m.
Ingram Hall
Anoushka Shankar, daughter of the legendary Ravi Shankar and trained by him on the sitar, performs.

April 4, 7:30 p.m.

The Joe Goode Performance Group performs Stay Together, a performance and dance work with adult content that is the result of collaboration between Goode and Michael Tilson Thomas, a composer, conductor and musical director of the San Francisco Symphony. Goode will remount his Bessie Award-winning work Deeply There for the second part of the evening. A dance master class will be held the previous day in Memorial Gym.

Single ticket prices for individual performances are $34, $30 and $26. Student tickets are available for $10 to all high school and college youth with a valid ID. Vanderbilt faculty and staff may purchase the entire series for $91 before Aug. 1. A limit of two series tickets may be purchased per faculty or staff member.
