There's something "Nuvo" in the neighborhood

On any given day, there is a place where you can get a “Margarito," watch the “Nuvo Network” and relax with friends while enjoying a freshly prepared “90210 Ques-Idea.”

Where does such a place exist? Right in East Nashville's Five Points neighborhood, at a fantastic new American restaurant called Nuvo Burrito.

Early last year, owners Sean Perry, Tom Justice, Andy Knight and Shane Yocom put into action their idea for an American burrito restaurant. When it opened in August, it created a new food genre for East Nashville that has quickly become a neighborhood staple.

With an incredibly creative menu that details the stylish regions of the American countryside, Nuvo Burrito offers a trendy, modern and clean atmosphere along with a style that is brand new to the Nashville area.

Its name, deriving from the French “nouveau” meaning "new," was created on a whim by owner Tom Justice. Upon returning from an afternoon jog, he had an inspiring idea. “Let’s just misspell it!” he said to partner Sean Perry. And voila, “Nuvo Burrito” had a name, a logo and a menu that is unlike any other.

In their effort to have a burrito restaurant that is fun, diet-friendly and completely fresh, the owners wanted to be sure to create an environment that doesn't compete with similar Mexican style cuisine in the area. The Nuvo menu reflects American culture with tasty and unique combinations such as the 90210 ques-idea, with seasoned chicken, artichoke hearts, mozzarella and goat cheese, roasted red peppers and cilantro pesto. Another healthy choice is the Plymouth burrito, with ground turkey, dried cranberries, spinach, whole-grain rice, 2 percent cheddar and a low-fat, poppyseed dressing.

On Wednesdays following this season of American Idol, Nuvo will offer weekly “Pre-Glee Parties” so customers can gather, enjoy drinks and free hors d’oeuvres from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m., and then watch the popular television show together at 7 p.m. Perry said Nuvo also will offer Glee trivia during commercial breaks in an event they hope will be fun for the entire neighborhood.

Outside of the restaurant, Perry and Justice are committed to staying involved in the local community. This August, to celebrate their first anniversary, they will host their second “wet burrito” contest at East Nashville's popular Tomato Festival. Like last year's event, an array of interesting contestants will don their most unique costumes and consume burritos while being hosed down by Perry.

“With a fresh menu and a fun atmosphere, we really want this to be a place for everyone,” Perry said. They have recently added four fresh and unique signature drinks as well as a “Nuvo After Dark” menu for customers who may want to enjoy a cocktail and snacks in the evenings. They have also begun catering events around Nashville.

Justice said he and his business partners expect to expand Nuvo into new locations very soon. But for now, Nuvo has become a hot spot with loyal patrons from across Nashville and it's owners couldn't be happier.

“We love this neighborhood, and we love our loyal customers,” Justice said.
