As part of a 13-city nationwide tour, The John McMullen Show – a program of Sirius Satellite Radio’s GLBT station, OutQ – will broadcast live from OutLoud! Books & Gifts two days this month.
To accommodate the broadcast, which airs weeknights from 8 p.m. to midnight locally, the store will remain open during those hours. The John McMullen Show will broadcast from OutLoud! on Thursday and Friday, September 15 and 16.
“On weekdays we usually close at 10:00 p.m. but we’ll be open until midnight for the show,” said OutLoud! owner Ted Jensen. “John McMullen is hoping there’ll be a crowd here, available for comments during his talk show so we’ll stay open for that.”
The program promises to very heavily focus on GLBT life in Nashville, anticipating a great deal of on-air interaction between the hosts, their Nashville guests and anyone else present for the broadcast.
“We do a five minute news break at the top of each hour,” said McMullen, “and we’ll leave a couple of pockets of time for those in the audience to have some interaction with us on the air, as well, in an open-forum format. The third hour of each show is what we call, ‘McMullen’s Big Five.’ This is a review of the top five news stories of the day and we invite our audience to participate and comment on these stories, as well. For that, we’ll have an open microphone if someone wants to join in.”
In an attempt to explore the state of GLBT Nashville and Tennessee, McMullen is planning to interview many local personalities, activists and businesspeople. Planned segments included representatives from Out & About Newspaper, Tennessee Equality Project, Nashville Association of Professional Persons, Diversity Builder, and One-in-Teen, along with gay country singer Brian Glenn. A trailblazer in the online radio industry before his move to Sirius and OutQ – where he is both a talk show host and station manager – McMullen worked with both RealNetworks and the GAYBC Radio Network prior to the founding of OutQ in 2002. He was named by OUT Magazine as one of the “Out 100” most important GLBT people of the year in 2003 after overseeing the launch of Sirius OutQ.
The nationwide tour will take them to such non-stereotypically gay hubs as Tulsa, Denver, Salt Lake City, and Lexington, along with San Diego, San Francisco and Seattle, among others. Nashville is the only city on the itinerary that will host the talk show at its GLBT community bookstore.
