Ready for a break from the hyped movies at the local Cineplex? Lucky for us all, it’s that time again! August 4, 2006 is the scheduled date for the opening of the Memphis Gay and Lesbian Community Center ’s (MGLCC) OutFlix Film Festival, the Mid-South’s only buffet of movies with central gay, lesbian, bisexual, and/or transgender themes.
Films produced both in the states and abroad are brought together to face ravenous moviegoers and critics starving for a first look at the best and worst of what the coming year will bring in movies. Of course, the success of these films depends heavily on how well received they are at national and international festivals. This year’s showing boasts 14 feature films and at least seven shorts. “Say Uncle”, “Queer As Folk” alumni Peter Paige’s comedic directorial debut telling of a childlike artist suspected of being a pedophile, is listed in the lineup. Darryl Stephens, who plays “Noah” on the history making first black gay series “Noah’s Arc,” takes the role of Andrew in Q. Allan Brocka’s “Boy Culture.” “ Small Town Gay Bar ” was a hit at the Nashville Film Festival in April, its down-home appeal makes it a definite must see.
The breathtaking Muvico at Peabody Place, adjoined to Memphis ’ historic Peabody Hotel, will play host to this year’s events. A cocktail affair at The Brooks Museum of Art will close the festival. Novice festivalgoers should be well cautioned that each film will be shown only once, and seats are going fast.
