A big weekend is coming up at Oak Ridge Unitarian Universalist Church (ORUUC,) as they wrap-up their pre-election efforts to support marriage equality.
This Sunday, October 15, they will have two services, at 9:15 and 11:00 am, with a special program in between. Instead of having the usual coffee hour, there will be a ceremony to finish wrapping the Church in white and purple ribbon to signify their stand for marriage equality.
Participants will gather in the sanctuary at 10:15, sing, and hear an inspirational message, providing an opportunity to make a public stand for equality. Local media are invited to the event.
Most of the ribbon wrapping will be done on Saturday. If you would like to help start the ribbon wrapping on Saturday, join the group for lunch at 1:15 PM, when the wrapping will begin.
Signatures need for newspaper adsHelen Jernigan, ORUUC member, continues to collect signatures for an advertisement in Oak Ridge newspapers. The ad will urge people to vote NO on Constitutional Amendment 1.
Even those who signed in and voted at their congregational meeting cannot assume ORUUC has permission to use your name in an advertisement. Those who want their names to be included in the ad, but have not yet signed one of the permission sheets should email Helen (heljern@aol.com) as soon as possible.
A Knoxville interfaith group is doing yet another signature ad, for the Knoxville News-Sentinel. Those who would like to add their signatures should for the flyers at area church that say "East Tennesseans for Faith and Freedom."
Canvassing set for Saturday at 10 a.m.ORUUC will be canvassing again this Saturday at 10 am and will go to a local neighborhood to knock on doors to ask people how they expect to vote on the constitutional amendment. The goal is simply to get opinions, to get people thinking about the issue, and hopefully show them that there are other local people who want to stop the amendment. The training for the canvassing will be provided as well as lunch for the participants. Lunch is scheduled for 1:15 pm.
