New GLBT Weight Watchers session to start Jan. 12

For two years a dedicated group of some 15 to 20 people have been meeting at Tribe for a weekly GLBT Weight Watchers group – and the effort continues to pay dividends.

With 1,953 lbs shed by the group, several people have reached their “goal” weight (a goal weight is a weight set by the individual and the Weight Watcher’s group leader).

A new series (each series runs about ten weeks) is beginning on Jan. 12. A total of 15 people must commit to joining for that 10-week series in order for the current group to continue meeting. If you are interested in joining, contact Stan Albright at stanleyalbright@realtracs.com.

Albright said the cost for new members is $120, while continuing members pay $110 and lifetime members $100.

The meetings, which start at 5:30 p.m. at Tribe on Church Street, generally last about an hour. They include a private “weigh-in” time and then a lesson lead by Weight Watcher group leader Stan Albright.

"They will teach you how to eat in a way that will keep your weight off," said participant Don Garrison, who recently achieved his goal weight.

A new plan will be unveiled to participants at the Jan. 12 meeting. The plan is called  “Momentum”. If you are a former or current Weight Watcher member, the biggest difference you’ll notice is that are no longer two different “plans” that members can follow.

“We have combined many of the best aspects of our previous plans to create a single, great plan,” said Albright. “A stronghold of the Momentum plan is that the awareness you get from tracking what you eat and drink puts you in better control. And, since tracking is not for everyone, we have created an alternative way of following the plan that is called “simply filling.”
Weight Watchers says in a press release that “the Momentum program was developed from a combination of the latest in scientific research with in-depth insights from members who have succeeded on prior Weight Watchers food plans. The Momentum program tackles physical hunger head-on by helping people identify foods that can keep them satisfied for longer; thus helping them stay in control for long-term, sustainable weight loss.”

"Following a food plan that enables you to make healthier choices without feeling deprived is incredibly helpful when losing weight," explained Karen Miller-Kovach, MS, RD, chief scientific officer, Weight Watchers International. "Many people delay getting started on a weight-loss plan because they fear being hungry. With Momentum(TM), there is no need to delay because it makes the connection between POINTS(R) values and healthy, filling foods for you. Having this understanding is not only helpful with weight loss, but also with keeping the weight off because the eating patterns taught with Momentum(TM) lead to an overall healthier lifestyle. Our successful members have told us that they feel different when eating lean proteins and whole grains versus something like fried food or processed foods and they love seeing the impact those foods have on their success."
