Nashville’s Street Theatre Company announces limited engagement of The Full Monty

Street Theatre Company, a non-profit arts organization dedicated to meaningful and accessible theatrical performances in Middle Tennessee, has announced that it will present a limited engagement of The Full Monty at the Gordon Jewish Community Center Auditorium beginning Friday, March 14, and running through Sunday, March 30. Show times are Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m.

The Full Monty is the story of five down-and-out steelworkers in Buffalo, New York who come up with a bold way to make some quick cash after seeing their wives’ excitement during male strip shows. Along the way, they find renewed self-esteem, the importance of friendship and the ability to make the best of bad situations.

The Full Monty is Street Theatre Company’s eighth straight production in three years, marking a milestone for the company as a thriving and vertical organization. With two more productions rounding off their Mainstage 2008 season: the edgy thriller, Popcorn and the classic Andrew Lloyd Weber musical, Evita, the company continues to demonstrate its upward mobility. This year’s season, including The Full Monty, is supported in part by the Tennessee Arts Commission and the Metro Nashville Arts Commission.

Since its inception in 2005, audience attendance numbers of Mainstage shows have increased 450 percent and the company is currently offering its first full array of youth acting classes this spring. Underscoring the Company’s commitment to educational programming, Street Theatre Company will perform No More Secrets, a didactic musical about sexual abuse prevention throughout several schools in Middle Tennessee this year.

In January of this year, the company also piloted a show on Radio Free Nashville 98.9, called “Spotlight on Theatre.” Each week, the show draws on Nashville’s strong artistic roots and invites artists to perform readings from upcoming shows, discuss their respective theatre companies and the relevance of theatre in today’s society.  The show airs every Monday night from 6-7 p.m.

“We couldn’t be more thrilled to bring The Full Monty to Nashville and share with Middle Tennessee the importance of meaningful theatre” said Cathy Sanborn Street, artistic director of Street Theatre Company. “This story has great heart and a great lesson about friendship and self-confidence. We remain committed to educational programming, artistic development – and of course – to exciting Mainstage productions like Monty.”

The Full Monty contains mature themes and subject matter. No child under 18 will be admitted without a parent or guardian. Tickets are $14 for adults and $10 for students and seniors. Reserved seating is available by calling 615-554-7414 or visiting www.streettheatrecompany.org. The Gordon Jewish Community Center will offer on-site child care during the March 22, show from 7:30 – 10:30 p.m. Please visit www.nashvillejcc.org/children for details.
