Dubbed "Peaceful Planet, A Green Concert," this season's Nashville In Harmony (NIH) concert features choral works that speak volumes about our world, our lives, our loves and our concerns. The wide range repertoire includes the Beatles classic “Imagine” and Reba McEntire’s “What If,” both of which long for peace in the world; as well as the haunting “Earth Song,” and Harry Belafonte’s lively, “Turn the World Around,” which celebrate the beauty of our planet.
NIH President-elect, Julie Reliford says, “This season we have an underlying theme that we believe and we want to share – that is, ‘To live at peace with each other and our world.’ We hope that we are conveying that not only with our music, but also in the way that we try incorporate that philosophy into our lives.”
In keeping with their season's concert theme, NIH itself has gone “green.” Under the guidance of their Green Committee, they've stopped bringing individual bottles of water for their rehearsal breaks in favor of filling reusable containers with filtered water, generously supplied each week by their hospitality chair, Susan Hawes.
Green Committee co-chairs Amy Leigh and Jennifer Tlumak have spearheaded a carpool effort by creating a mileage map for their membership, and encouraging them to ride together to rehearsals, events and concerts. They will compute the miles saved by this effort at the end of the season to determine exactly how much carbon dioxide was kept from polluting the environment.
In addition, the group is having "green tips" at each rehearsal and in their weekly newsletter. Whether purchasing cloth bags for grocery shopping (no paper or plastic) or adjusting their thermostats, their members are making great strides toward living a more “green” lifestyle, rather than merely singing about it.
