An appearance at the Bluebird Cafe is significant to up-and- coming artists, and for many serves as a milestone towards Music City stardom. Nashville Ballet collaborates with local singers/songwriters to present an all-new production, Bluebird Cafe at the Ballet 2, featuring two of the Bluebird’s most recognized performers — Jonell Mosser and Gary Nicholson.
Mosser, a fixture at Bluebird since 1987, will be joined by Nashville pianist Jeff Steinberg and Nashville Ballet for new renderings on classic Nashville songs like “Help Me Make it Through the Night” and “You Ain’t Woman Enough to Take My Man.” These pieces will be choreographed by Nashville Ballet Artistic Director Paul Vasterling. The music of Gary Nicholson, another Bluebird regular who has penned over 350 songs, including hits for Garth Brooks, George Jones, BB King, and Vince Gill, will be interpreted by award-winning choreographer Gina Patterson of Ballet Austin, whose works have also been commissioned by Ballet Florida and Ballet Pacifica.
Celebrating the struggle for freedom by Africans in America is the focus of The Princely Players, a gospel ensemble that has been featured on NPR, the BBC, and can be heard on the Time-Life Civil War recordings. A powerful new gospel ballet, created by Robert Philander-Valentine, will bring to life The Princely Players’ songs of hope and courage with contemporary flair and movement.
The program will conclude with Ploughing the Dark, choreographed by award-winning independent choreographer Sarah Slipper which premiered in 2004 as part of Nashville Ballet and Vanderbilt University Blair School of Music’s collaborative project, Emergence. This duet is set to Vanderbilt composer Michael Kurek’s, Trio for Violin, Cello, and Piano.
