The City of Chicago's Mayor Lori Lightfoot has announced that she tested positive for COVID-19. She says "she's feeling fine" and is experiencing cold-like symptoms.
She said she will be working from home during her isolation period after experiencing mild symptoms.Mayor Lightfoot is the highest profile Illinois lawmaker to test positive until now.
The mayor's breakthrough case comes one day after she struck a deal with the Chicago Teachers' Union (CTU), which kept schools closed for four days as they demanded better COVID-19 safety policies amid the surge in the pandemic caused by the highly-contagious Omicron variant.
As late as Monday night, Lightfoot spoke at a press conference with CPS CEO Pedro Martinez and Chicago Department of Health commissioner Dr. Allison Arwady. But they all wore masks when not speaking.
Mayor Lightfoot used the news of her Covid case to remind folks "to get vaccinated and boosted as it's the only way to beat this pandemic."
Lightfoot said she will follow CDC protocols on isolation and quarantining and has tweeted reminding families to get vaccinated including chidren aged 5 years and up.
