Mature Pride KC
The membership numbers at Mature Pride KC (maturepridekc.org) are increasing steadily, and the group just celebrated its second birthday in January. Mature Pride now has 254 friends on its website and 565 members in its weekly schedule and Evite database. Kayaking, cooking and breakfast clubs have just been added, and dog-walking and potluck (ages 55+) clubs are in the works.
Mature Pride is a fun, dynamic social group for all LGBT and LGBT-welcoming folks. The MP gang is just out for a good time – from dance lessons, dart nights, plays and art outings to the book, shape, bicycle and supper clubs. Men and women, young and old, straight and gay – everyone is welcome.
Check out the group’s website or email maturepride@kc.rr.org for more information.

Rock for Equality.Org

Check out its public service spot about same-sex retirees (starring space aliens) entitled “What Kind of Planet Are We On?” Supporting rallies are scheduled for April in Los Angeles and Washington, D.C.
Residence, Resorts and Convalescence
A residential space named for openly gay Congressman Barney Frank’s mother, Elsie, opened in Chelsea, Mass., in February. It is dedicated specifically to the care of LGBT elders. Senior LGBT living centers, retirement homes and resorts can also be found in Boston, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Arizona, Santa Fe, N.M., and Berlin, among other locations.
Armour Oaks Senior Living Community in south Kansas City welcomes LGBT residents. Colette Panchot, director of sales and marketing at Armour Oaks, offers this advice:
Seniors in transition
“It is important to pay attention to signs in yourself or your environment that is it time for a change. Many seniors feel comfortable in their homes, but don’t acknowledge that their homes no longer serve them. Having a professional organizer help downsize possessions and a real estate agent prepare a home for sale is the first step. There are real estate professionals who have earned certification in senior issues, and they are especially sensitive to older adults’ needs.”
Healthful living for LGBT seniors
“Each generation is different in how it deals with aging issues. It is still unclear what types of services and living arrangements LGBT baby boomers will demand, but the options for the current generation of seniors are plentiful. Most retirement communities welcome people starting at age 55 to 62, and they do an excellent job addressing residents’ social, physical and spiritual needs. … Good health is our most valuable asset as we age, and protecting it should be job one for every LGBT senior.”
LGBT Senior-Targeted Websites
There is no dearth of LGBT senior-targeted Web pages out there (asaging.org/lain, thetaskforce.org/issues/aging, gaylesbianretiring.org and gleh.org). Navigating these sites can be challenging. Please use caution when searching for senior facts. Consulting with an advocacy group like SAGE (Services & Advocacy for GLBT Elders — sageusa.org) is one prudent option.
