Reverend Cindy Andrews-Looper (or Pastor Cindy as she is known by many) leads Holy Trinity Community Church, UCC, on the west side of Nashville along with her partner of eight years, Jennifer Austin.
Every Sunday, approximately 350 people visit one of three services in what is one of the fastest growing churches in the United Church of Christ.
Part of its success can be attributed to the way each woman complements the other. Pastor Cindy, having worked as a comedienne, is used to dealing with the spotlight, is a visionary and loves to meet and mingle with people.
Austin, who is also employed full-time at Holy Trinity as the Director of Education and Administration, is an organizer and implementer who sees potential in people. She recruits, teaches and equips others to accomplish ministries that benefit both the volunteer and the community being served.
Pastor Cindy is comfortable in the spotlight while Austin thrives behind the scenes. Where one is weak, the other is strong.
Though their personalities are different, they complement one another as they live together with a common goal of shining hope and sincere love in the GLBT community.
“Our foundation is our shared faith in Christ and our mutual desire to grow in that faith individually and as a couple,” Austin said.
Each year, Pastor Cindy, Austin and others from Holy Trinity, participate in Nashville Pride. Pastor Cindy is a member of the Tennessee Equality Project and she and Austin both have spoken with legislators about related matters.
Together, couple leads Holy Trinity to make it an integral part of the community, providing a safe place for individuals to discover their faith in God and grow spiritually in that faith.
“And at the end of the day, we both love to laugh," Pastor Cindy said. "While we take our work seriously, a good sense of humor and silliness serves as a reminder that we are still a work in progress.”
