News Talk 99 hears from Knox GLBT leaders
News Talk 99’s Halerin Hilton Hill hosted a call-in segment featuring two well known Knoxville GLBT leaders on Thursday, April 28. Norris Dryer and Rev. Bob Galloway sat in on the well-known radio talk show for a segment lasting one and a half hours.
“I felt that we were treated with respect by the host and other station personnel,” noted Dryer, a former candidate for the Knoxville City Council in the last election. Mr. Dryer is best known for having been the director of WUOT-FM, a listener-supported public radio station broadcasting from www.utk.edu, The University of Tennessee.
Bob Galloway is the Senior Pastor at the Metropolitan Community Church of Knoxville and the President of the Knoxville Ministerial Association.
East Tennessee Progressive Network holds 2nd regional gathering
The East Tennessee Progressives Network, a newly formed group in Knoxville , strives to promote and facilitate community building around social justice, peace and sustainability-related interests.
At the second quarterly meeting and potluck, the organizers, Kim Naujock and Chris Hargrove, encouraged the group to utilize the organization’s online calendar and to build the community directory.
The speaker was Out and About’s Beth Maples-Bays who addressed volunteer work for multi-issue inclusion and the integration of activists. Her sharing of personal experiences included the excitement of finding a group of accepting environmental activists at a local high school by using the resources of the Network.
“I wish I’d found a school like that when I was sixteen,” Maples-Bays said, referring to Laurel High School, a private learning-enhanced secondary educational facility located in Knoxville’s historic Fort Sanders area. The school is a member of the National Coalition of Alternative Community Schools (NCACS) and is a premier learning environment that enhances creativity and independent thinking.
