The Key West Business Guild (KWBG) will be hosting a major new event next spring. Gay Spring Break is expected to draw thousands of young gay men and women in February, March and April 2007 to the island of Key West. Information can be found at www.gayspringbreak.org.
“Spring break is a yearly tradition for college students around the world,” said Ian Whitney, chairman of New Events for the KWBG and one of Gay Spring Break’s organizers, “and Key West has long been rated as the top gay spring break destination. This year, gay business leaders decided to take spring break to the next level by featuring a series of events geared towards young gay men and women and their friends that will make this one of the nation’s hottest gay parties.”
Gay Spring Break will feature six weeks of beach parties, dance parties, boat parties, drag shows, men-only and women-only events, meet-and-greet receptions, contests, and several recreational opportunities on the island and
on the surrounding barrier reef. Organizers expect that Gay Spring Break will have over 150 events geared toward gay and lesbian spring breakers. Because Gay Spring Break is expected to draw many gay student leaders, there will also be activities that allow for networking and leadership development.
Of course, Gay Spring Break in Key West has no age limit and is at the height of Key West’s tourist season, so expect a diverse collection of gay and lesbian tourists in addition to the thousand of college-aged revelers. Gay Spring Break events are open to anyone. “Gay Spring Break is not just for college kids,” said Whitney. “We are reaching out to all young gay men and women, the circuit party crowd, and all others who enjoy the types of events that we are planning, good music, palm trees, nightlife, fun people, and all of the many things that Key West has to offer.”
According to Steve Smith, President of the International Gay and Lesbian Travel Association, “This event is unique in that it will introduce the next generation of gay and lesbian tourists to events and facilities that specifically cater to them. Key West is excited to play such an important role in the development of the gay and lesbian tourism market.”
Key West has been rated as the top gay spring break destination by planetout.com, gay.com, and travelchannel.com; and the readers of “The Out Traveler” and OutTraveler.com in November, 2006, named Key West their favorite
gay resort town.
