Happy Hook-ups and dating: The best in M4M apps

For gay men looking for love – or, more likely, something a lot quicker – mobile apps have made meeting men easier, or at least quicker. With so many apps available, though, there’s a challenge in finding one (or a handful) that’s right for you. So if you think you’re limited to Grindr, think again. Visit the gallery above or read on for some of the apps that you’ll find other men on these days.

Distinc.tt

Aimed at what the app calls the “urban” gay, Distinc.tt is an app that works better in larger cities – you know, like Atlanta. What makes Distinc.tt…well, distinct, is that you can earn points, which pushes you to different levels of membership.

Grindr

Grindr’s the app everyone knows about. Since it was the first mobile social app to take off, it still has the widest range of users. If you don’t really have a “type,” that’s great. If you’re into something really specific, though, you may want to look elsewhere. The app is pretty basic compared to others listed here, so don’t be surprised by the limited functionality.

Growlr

With Growlr, there’s a good bit of overlap with Scruff for the kinds of men you’ll find on the app. If the name didn’t make it clear, we mean bears. Growlr tends to be a little more relaxed than some of the other apps – check out some of the premade growls, which require a healthy sense of humor.

Hornet

Hornet is, for the most part, a pretty standard mobile app. One area where it stands out: it asks about HIV status. While it’s easy to lie, it does put the information out there at least.

Jack’d

As one of the more popular apps out there, Jack’d is essentially an advanced version of Grindr. You’re likely to find all sorts of men on the app, like Grindr, but with functionality similar to what you’ll find on other apps like Scruff and Mister.

Mister

Looking for something a little more serious? You may want to check out Mister. The guys behind Mister have a particular aim for their app: they want a “grown-up version of Grindr.” The app is essentially a cross between Grindr and OkCupid.

Recon

If you’re into anything kinky, Recon is the app for you. From leather and rubber to bondage and fisting, the various categories users can choose from are certainly wide enough. Choose wisely, though – users can only select one category for their profiles.

Scruff

Outside of Grindr, Scruff is one of the biggest apps out there. While aimed at the bear community, Scruff encourages interaction with all sorts of men, including military and trans men. The app’s popularity has also brought in a lot of newer users who like their men scruffy, even if they themselves aren’t.

Squirt

While mainly a web-based social networking site, Squirt is branching out with a mobile version of their site that resembles an app. Unlike some of the other apps and sites out there, Squirt is pretty explicit about being for sex.
