EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR – GAY & LESBIAN MEDICAL ASSOCIATION
ORGANIZATIONAL BACKGROUND

The Gay & Lesbian Medical Association (GLMA) is the leading organization in North America committed to ensuring equality in health care for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) individuals and health care professionals. Established in 1981, GLMA is a membership organization of multi-disciplinary health care professionals that achieves its goals by using medical expertise in professional education, public policy work, patient education and referrals, and the promotion of research. POSITION OVERVIEW

Based in San Francisco, the Executive Director will be responsible for leading and managing GLMA’s fund raising, program development, personnel management and development, marketing, and community/public relations. The Executive Director is also an ex-officio member of the Board of Directors of the organization.

PRIMARY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

The Executive Director holds the ultimate responsibility for overall management of GLMA’s fundraising, program development, personnel management and development, marketing and community/public relations, and Board relations.

1. Management, Finances, and Operations

• Serve as the chief operating officer of the organization and assume primary responsibility for all organizational operations.

• Develop a results-oriented management culture that maximizes productivity, efficiency, and quality of programs.

• Recruit, supervise, develop and evaluate staff.

• Refine and implement the strategic plan with the Board and staff to set direction and maintain focus on the mission and goals.

• Develop and monitor organizational budgets and financials to support operations, programs, and services. Work closely with finance staff and the Board to ensure efficient financial operations.

• Develop a comprehensive work plan for GLMA staff that includes clear goals and timelines and reporting regularly to the Board on progress toward those goals.

• Display a commitment to diversity (e.g. racial/ethnic, gender, gender identity, socioeconomic status, disability, non-physician professionals) in all aspects of GLMA’s work, including fund and program development, membership recruitment, policy initiatives, public relations, and programs.

• Maintain thorough documentation of Board and organizational policies, meeting proceedings, and historical timelines.



2. Board of Directors

• Work with the Board of Directors to implement the vision, objectives, and goals from the strategic plan as outlined above. Manage the conversion of this vision into plans that accomplish the desired results within realistic financial and operational parameters.

• Work with Board members to implement fundraising program.

• In partnership with the Board President and President-Elect, develop annual work plans for Board committees, and assist the tracking of Board-assigned tasks.

• Support appropriate Board committees responsible for administration, finance, financial resource development, marketing, public relations, and program development and implementation.

• Support board development efforts including identifying and developing new and emerging leaders; undertaking board stewardship training as appropriate.

• Attend all Board meetings, including monthly executive committee calls.

• Support operations and administration of the Board (e.g., oversee meeting logistics, support Board’s evaluation of chief executive).

• Perform additional duties as determined by the Board.



3. Fund Development & Membership Services

• Oversee fundraising and implementation, including identifying resource requirements, researching funding sources, establishing strategies to approach funders, submitting proposals, and overseeing fundraising records and documentation.

• Establish and implement targeted fundraising plan from varied sources including government/public sector, foundations, corporations, and membership associations.

• Assume primary responsibility, in collaboration with key Board members and other key stakeholders, to meet directly with prospective donors to solicit contributions.

• Create new relationships within the established philanthropic community for new funding, collaborations, and donor prospecting and cultivation.

• Develop and implement membership strategy in conjunction with Board

• Develop strategy to target broader membership base (larger LGBT community)



4. Policy, Public Relations, and Marketing

• Promote visibility by highlighting GLMA's programs and services locally, regionally, and nationally.

• Serve as spokesperson throughout the community and in the media, together with appropriate national leaders and Board members, to enhance the visibility of the organization and to position it as a leading resource for LGBT health issues

• Establish and maintain effective relationships and/or networks with appropriate professional organizations, LGBT-focused organizations, funders/donors, providers, governmental entities, corporations and other voluntary agencies.

• Develop strategies, materials, and resources to support the public relations and marketing agenda.

• Ensure the organization and its mission, programs, products and services are consistently presented in strong, positive manner to relevant stakeholders





QUALIFICATIONS



The ideal candidate will be an exceptional leader with strong organizational, political, and fundraising skills. He/she will have the following experience, skills, and leadership/personal qualities.



1. Experience

• Significant experience in non-profit and/or professional association management

• Demonstrated ability to raise funds from foundations, government sources, and private sector sources, preferably in health care sector

• Fiscal management, supervisory skills and experience

• Master’s degree or equivalent experience in non-profit management.

• Experience in membership organizations preferred

• Accomplished public speaker and communicator who is comfortable advocating for LGBT health issues in a variety of settings (conferences, donors, press, and public sector officials, and other stakeholders).

• Policy analysis skills and contacts with health policy and advocacy organizations are desired

• Experience with Web 2.0 social networking technology is desired



2. Skills

• Knowledge of LGBT health issues and a commitment to ending discrimination in the health profession and health care

• Ability to develop, initiate and maintain new programming and funding sources

• Strong management experience including performance review, team building, hiring and all facets of staff management

• Demonstrated ability in building and growing organizations

• Skills in strategic planning and implementation

• Excellent oral and written communication skills

• Demonstrated ability to manage time, evaluate progress, and adjust activities to complete assignments within established timeframes

• Proficiency in database management and general word processing programs, including Microsoft Word and Excel.



3. Leadership and Personal Qualities

• Proven history of effective leadership and staff supervision

• Strong manager committed to team building and staff development

• Demonstrated ability to work in a high pressure, limited resource environment

• Demonstrated commitment to issues of cultural, gender, and socioeconomic diversity

• Excellent interpersonal skills including superior oral and written communications skills and ability to interact and collaborate with different stakeholders (medical professionals, board members, policy makers, staff, and partner organizations).

• Ability to travel regularly, up to 10% of scheduled time
