Foglight Foodhouse is worth the drive

If you love food and are looking for an excuse to skip out of town for a minute, consider making an evening of dining at the Foglight Foodhouse.

Located 70 winding miles southeast of Nashville in Walling, TN, Foglight has been filling bellies since 1997.

Serving American food with a heavy Cajun influence, Foglight can offer anything from a slightly spicy, very decadent blackened chicken Alfredo to a perfectly cooked filet mignon or a tasty Chilean sea bass.

Chef and owner Edward Philpot oversees the operation and has been involved with most everything concerning the restaurant, including clearing the property at 275 Powerhouse Rd. to build the restaurant when the land was just a dumping ground.

He helped locate the recycled materials to build the private party room that was recently added and works as chef in the Foglight kitchen five nights a week.

The restaurant is warm and inviting with multi-colored and white lights strung across the ceiling and several large, colorful murals, painted by Philpot’s father Jim, adorning the walls.

A dining experience at Foglight should be considered an all evening event, not just because of the eatery’s remote location but because Philpot and his staff believe in taking plenty of time to enjoy a meal.

“If you are in a hurry for a meal, you have come to the wrong restaurant,” Philpot explained.

Rob Rutledge, a long-time employee at Foglight, turned a serving job that was a “short term option” into a stint that has lasted 12 years so far.

He and his partner live in the area while raising their two adopted daughters.  Rutledge said the people in the area have been accepting of his same-sex relationship.

“It’s a small area, but it’s also touristy, and I’ve never really considered it an issue," Rutledge said. "There is an overall good feeling here.”

Making an evening of driving out to Foglight, sharing a thoughtful, delightfully prepared meal with good company could be just the thing that is needed to get through this last bit of winter.

The staff at Foglight certainly makes everyone feel welcome and knows how to present a memorable meal.
