This film is being shown in conjunction with the KMA exhibit – Beauford Delaney: From New York to Paris

Delaney was a gay native Knoxvillian
June 27 marks the 36th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots, begun as yet another New York City tactical police raid of a popular Greenwich Village gay bar, the Stonewall Inn. But this night was different, the crowd fought back, and continued for several nights of protest. The gay liberation movement was transformed from oppression into pride and action that has forever changed gay culture in this country and beyond.

Tearing down more of these barriers was the aim of Marlon Riggs' 1989 award winning Tongues Untied. By confronting the cloak of invisibility around black gay life, Riggs hoped to shatter America 's brutalizing silence around matters of sexual and racial differences, discriminations suffered by Beauford Delaney earlier in the century.
