Community Players to stage 'A Christmas Carol: A Ghost Story'

Community Players will be presenting a production of "A Christmas Carol: A Ghost Story" Nov. 30-Dec. 16 at Cedar Ridge Community of Christ located at 3220 Bell Rd. in Nashville.

This is a show not to be missed as it is Community Players’ ninth production of the Charles Dickens classic. However, this year’s production is a bit different, as it stays entirely true to the original text by Dickens in "story theater" fashion using an impressive six-level stage.

Directing the grand production this year is David Hutson, with performances by Frank Garramone, Lucas Hutson, J. Spurlock, John Carpenter and many other wonderful performers including several talented child actors.

The great strength of a book," says Hutson, "is its ability to take you inside the mind of a character and share his thoughts and motivations, fears and hopes. Story theater allows the audience to experience the thoughts of the characters."

This version of A Christmas Carol will attempt to do something very few films, television shows or theater productions do. It will bring to the audience the voice of Charles Dickens.

"Most people are familiar with this story, but few have actually read the book," claims Hutson. "I went right back to the source. Instead of reinterpreting, adapting and taking artistic license as I have done in past years, I reduced the process down to simply editing Dickens’ own words and dividing them between three narrators to bring his voice back to the story."

Around 95 percent of the dialogue in this production is taken straight from the original text and the rest is description from the book turned into actual dialogue.

Hutson states, "Nothing has been added and every possible aspect of the story has been restored to the basic elements that made this one of the most popular and endearing books ever written."

A Christmas Carol: A Ghost Story will run Fridays and Saturdays at 7:00 p.m. and Sundays at 5:00 p.m. Tickets are $10 for adults, $7 for children under 12 and $8 for groups of ten or more.
