The Blount County Commission will consider a resolution on Tuesday, October 6 to urge the Tennessee Legislature to nullify marriage equality in this state.
Specifically it asks
all of the Officers of the State of Tennessee, the Governor, the Attorney General, and the members of the Tennessee Legislature, to join US, and utilize all authority within their power to protect Natural Marriage, from lawless court opinions, AND THE financial schemes of the enemies of righteousness wherever the source AND defend the Moral Standards of Tennessee.
And in addition, there's this hysteria:
WE adopt this Resolution before God that He pass us by in His Coming Wrath and not destroy our County as He did Sodom and Gomorrah and the neighboring cities. As the Passover Lamb was a means of salvation to the ancient Children of Israel, so we stand upon the safety of the Lamb of God to save us.
WE adopt this Resolution begging His favor in light of the fact that we have been forced to comply and recognize that the State of Tennessee, like so many other God-fearing States, MAY have fallen prey to a lawless judiciary in legalizing what God and the Bible expressly forbids.
According to Gwen Schablik, a committee chair with the Tennessee Equality Project, six commissioners are committed to passing the resolution. Eleven votes are required for it to pass. An event page on Facebook has been set up. On it, Maryville resident Ashley Abbott announced a "group meeting at the Clayton Center Plaza on Tuesday at 5:45 to gather and walk to the courthouse."
TEP is asking interested supporters in the area to contact their commissioner by telephone to emphasize the legal and financial costs the county and state will incur by putting forth legislation to nullify the nationwide marriage law that will inevitably fail. Residents who choose to speak at the meeting should plan to arrive early and sign up to do so. And wear red.
Though reps from TEP stress that interested parties stay away from discussions of a religious nature, the Maryville Daily Times quoted Dr. Phillip Michael Sherman who is an associate professor of religion at Maryville College regarding the Sodom and Gommorah reference in the resolution, and he has concluded it "is not a story about homosexuality as we might conceive it."
The committee meeting will begin at 6:30pm EST in room 430 at the Blount County Courthouse.
