Chelsea Handler is coming Nov. 21 to the Uptown Theater in Kansas City, Mo., for herLife Will Be the Death of Me comedy tour.
Her new tour will be very different from her celebrity-dishing, vodka-infused comedy of years past. The 2016 election took a toll on Handler, to the extent of a midlife crisis, resulting in a tell-all memoir of nearly the same title: Life Will Be the Death of Me … and You, Too!
In her book and tour, Handler hilariously chronicles her emotional experiences in therapy and her journey to the realization of her own privilege as a wealthy white comedian from Bel Air.
After the 2016 election, she quickly pivoted from booze to bud, and she refers to cannabis as a gateway drug to meditation and therapy. Her memoir addresses how she helped herself heal by confronting the skeletons in her closet around her older brother’s death and her father’s rejection when she was a child.
Handler’s wave of change within extended into a Netflix documentary, released earlier this year, called Hello, Privilege. It’s Me, Chelsea. She touches on the complex issues of white privilege, and, within that context, where she fits in. The guilt about her own privilege inspired her to use her experiences to promote change in a post-election America.
Handler has always been one to tell it how it is. With this memoir, Netflix documentary and stand-up tour, she is using her platform to transcend her years (2007-14) as the familiar boozy late-night talk-show host from the E! network. She’s still telling it how it is, but now with a message and mission. She wants to create a change that’s bigger than herself, and on the way continue to make us laugh.
