Animal deaths prompt pet food recall

An Ontario-based company that produces pet food recalled cat and dog food including Eukanuba, Iams and Nutro following 10 animal deaths and reports of kidney failure.

Menu Foods recalled 60 million containers of wet pet food including dog food sold under 48 brands and cat food sold under 40 brands. The products were sold since December at pet stores and major retailers such as Kroger, PetSmart, Safeway and Wal-Mart.

Dawn Parks, a pet care manager at PetSmart in Mount Juliet, told NewsChannel 5 Friday that her store wouldn't know the specific product numbers affected until Saturday morning.

On Saturday morning, many retailers expected to find out which containers should be pulled from store shelves once Menu Foods identified specific product numbers.

"If some people buy the food and we, when we find out, we'll take back any food," Parks said. "If the customers want to bring it back Friday, they can. If they want to wait until Saturday to find out exactly what SKUs are, we'll take back any food."
