Screening nuns and habits and movies, oh my!

For those who have not yet found a reason to visit to the new Outloud Café, the world famous Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence are now providing all-new excuses to venture out.

At the beginning of August, the trio of Sisters—Sister Right Sarong, Sister Enya Face and Sister Missionary Position—began hosting "Screening Nuns," a weekly, free movie night that has become a rousing success with no less than 20-25 people in attendance at each Thursday night screening.

According to Sister Right, who is the driving force and exquisite fashion sense behind the event, the idea came as a revelation to herself and Sister Enya Face while on a road trip to Asheville.

“We were trying to think of ways to help OutCentral and the new Café at Outloud,” explained Sister Right. “We also wanted to help contribute to the whole Church Street community.”

What the good Sisters came up with was a weekly movie night designed to draw people in so they will help support these great businesses. As an added incentive, it was decided to tie in a charity beneficiary every month, so the event would also give back to the community with 10 percent of the Café’s sales going to the charity of the month. There is also a contribution plate for attendees to make additional donations. During August, One-In-Teen was the beneficiary and September will see donations made to The Nashville AIDS Walk.

Each movie night starts with a Gay Shorts presentation at 7 p.m. The focus of the film selections at 8 p.m. tends to linger on new releases that can be found next door at Outloud. The Sisters try to maintain a good balance between gay, lesbian and trans content whenever possible, with each month ending with a camp classic.

The environment is fun, relaxed and comfortable with attendees able to order from the exceptional food and drink selections offered by the friendly staff of the Café.

September’s schedule of screenings is as follows:

September 6 - Bam Bam & Celeste
Celeste (Margaret Cho) and Bam Bam (Bruce Daniels) escape their Midwest hometown on an epic road trip to New York City. There they take on their high-school nemeses - now the dictators of the world-famous Salon Mirage - and discover that true beauty lies within.

September 13 - Small Town Gay Bar
Deep in the heart of the Bible Belt, it is evident the fight for equal rights is far from over. GLBTs in these areas lack social outlets, still face cruelty, ridicule and even violence. Despite being attacked on all sides by the Christian coalition, several spirited bar owners have created an oasis for gays to call home...a Small Town Gay Bar. Executive Producer Kevin Smith presents an intimate portrait of these establishments and the patrons who inhabit them. Exploring the gratefulness the patrons feel for these various places we learn there is much more provided than an evening of entertainment.

September 20 - Puccini For Beginners
Dumped by her lesbian lover, Allegra (Elizabeth Reaser) does the unthinkable: She starts having an affair with a man (Justin Kirk)! However, at the same time, she starts falling for a straight gal (Gretchen Mol) who surprisingly returns her affections. While juggling two relationships at the same time, Allegra begins to question her own sexuality.

September 27 - Camp Classic Night: All About Eve
Arguably one of the best movies ever made, this Bette Davis classic is a must-see for any classic film aficionado. Anne Baxter as aspiring actress Eve Harrington maneuvers her way into the lives of Broadway star Margo Channing (Davis), playwright Lloyd Richards and director Bill Sampson. This classic story of ambition and betrayal has become part of American folklore. Bette Davis claims to have based her character on the persona of film actress Talullah Bankhead. Davis' line "Fasten your seat belts, it's going to be a bumpy night" is legendary, but, in fact, the film’s entire dialog sparkles with equal brilliance.

Also recently announced on Sister Right’s busy schedule is Sing Out! a benefit concert for OutCentral, which she will emcee.  According to producer Freddy Freeman, the event will showcase a diverse lineup of Nashville’s best-known gay and lesbian vocal artists and musicians.

“I’m excited to share this opportunity to give back to the community,” Freeman commented.  “We hope this is the first of many cultural events that will feature talent from across the country.”

The Café at Outloud will host Sing Out! on Friday, Sept. 21, at 7 p.m. Scheduled performers include Steph Mahan, Namoli Brennet, Freddy Freeman and other friends.  A donation of $10 is requested, but no amount will be refused. The Café at Outloud is located at 1707 Church Street in Nashville and is a smoke and alcohol free environment.

Organized early in 2007, OutCentral plans to open its storefront next to the Café on Church Street this fall housing programs, meetings and non-profit business operations. According to executive director Jim Hawk, OutCentral will be “a positive energy filled environment where organizations can collaborate, where enduring relationships can be created, where there is integration rather than isolation, and where recreation and education flourish.”

In addition to being seen out and about in Nashville in support of varied community events and fundraisers, The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence will be seen in the autumn at Short Mountain Sanctuary in Liberty, Tennessee for the Fall Gathering. They will be conducting a community auction at the sanctuary to raise money for more land to secure the Sanctuary’s future.

by Spectrum Medical Care Center

Nurse Practitioner Ari Kravitz

When I started medical transition at 20 years old, it was very difficult to get the care I needed for hormone replacement therapy because there are very few providers trained in starting hormones for trans people, even though it’s very similar to the hormones that we prescribe to women in menopause or cisgender men with low testosterone.

I hope more providers get trained in LGBTQ+ healthcare, so they can support patients along their individual gender journey, and provide the info needed to make informed decisions about their body. I’ve personally seen my trans patients find hope and experience a better quality of life through hormone replacement therapy.
