Richmond becomes first openly transgender person to win Tennessee election

Marisa Richmond has become Tennessee’s first openly transgender person to win an election in the history of the State of Tennessee.

Richmond won 99.7% of the vote in the Feb. 5 election to become the Davidson County Democratic Committeewoman to represent District 23. Richmond received more than 1,800 votes, while a write-in candidate received six votes.

"I have officially declared my candidacy to be a delegate pledged to Senator Hillary Clinton, but if you live in the 5th Congressional District, you are eligible to vote for me regardless of who you supported in the primaries,” she said in an email to supporters. “. … now begins the process of selecting the individuals to fill those positions. The 2004 Democratic National Convention had several out GLBT delegates, seven of whom were transgender. I want to see Tennessee be part of an even larger GLBT, and especially transgender, caucus in 2008 in Denver.”

Nurse Practitioner Ari Kravitz

When I started medical transition at 20 years old, it was very difficult to get the care I needed for hormone replacement therapy because there are very few providers trained in starting hormones for trans people, even though it’s very similar to the hormones that we prescribe to women in menopause or cisgender men with low testosterone.

I hope more providers get trained in LGBTQ+ healthcare, so they can support patients along their individual gender journey, and provide the info needed to make informed decisions about their body. I’ve personally seen my trans patients find hope and experience a better quality of life through hormone replacement therapy.
