QUEEN OF SHOW ME PRIDE: Mulan
A puppeteer and clothing designer by trade, Mulan’s favorite hangout is actually at home. A performer at Flo’s Cabaret, she says that RuPaul’s Drag Race is her favorite TV show, along with King of the Hill, and that her most embarrassing moment is when her boobs fell off on stage one night. One of her goals is to have videos of her performing on YouTube. Her memorable cat outfit and touching answer to the Royalty Court question are still embedded in people’s minds from the competition that won her the title Queen of Show Me Pride 2010.
KING OF SHOW ME PRIDE: Logan Rider
Sponsored by JR’s Place in Olathe, and a member of the Buttwiser’s Bash, Logan’s ambition is to finish his degree and be a counselor for troubled youth. Possibly this would explain the fascination with NCIS — he gives a shout out to Abby on that TV show. His most embarrassing moment on stage was when he had rushed to go to the bathroom before the show to brush his teeth and use the restroom, then ran out onto the stage forgetting to zip the fly. His favorite movie is Pay It Forward, and he spends most of his time as our King doing just that. Tirelessly devoted to the Pride cause, Logan has even gone on stage while recovering from surgery, barely able to put any pressure on his foot. A true King, his favorite place to be is with any of his drag family!
MISS SHOW ME PRIDE: Shylo Menefee
Are you ready, girls and guys? Shylo says her hobbies are car repair and knitting. Can you get any more versatile than that? She has a cat, Lewis J. Watters, and a dog, Detective Sgt. Havers. Shylo is a Gemini and she likes Greek food. Her favorite hangouts include Missie B’s and the Lesbian Headquarters of Olathe (you figure it out). She eventually wants to go to the police and FBI academies to become an FBI profiler. She loves, loves, loves The Rachel Maddow Show and is a customer service representative during the day. At night, she has performed and been present at almost all of the Pride fundraising efforts, singing her heart out for the delight of all our audiences. A true ambassador, Shylo helps in every way that she can, wearing her crown with the Pride she feels for the community.
MR. SHOW ME PRIDE: T.R. Clapper
You all recognize T.R. from Outabounds, where he is the bar manager. He loves Glee, Kelly Clarkson and The Devil Wears Prada, and is a Taurus (go figure!). His favorite food is Mexican, which surprises most of us, since he did the Chicken Dance and gave out chicken wings as his talent number during Royalty Court. His answer to the question “Why do you think Pride is important to our community?” brought thunderous applause and cheering, and he has demonstrated through his fundraising efforts during his reign that he meant every word of that answer. Appearing at events from Reunite the Rainbow to the Biscuit and Sausage Gravy Breakfast, T.R. continues to reach out to all facets of our city and community to bring everyone together in unity.

When I started medical transition at 20 years old, it was very difficult to get the care I needed for hormone replacement therapy because there are very few providers trained in starting hormones for trans people, even though it’s very similar to the hormones that we prescribe to women in menopause or cisgender men with low testosterone.
I hope more providers get trained in LGBTQ+ healthcare, so they can support patients along their individual gender journey, and provide the info needed to make informed decisions about their body. I’ve personally seen my trans patients find hope and experience a better quality of life through hormone replacement therapy.
If you don’t have a primary care physician who specializes in LGBTQ+ care in your community, you may need to educate yourself (and your provider). But, before you seek such therapy, here are five things you should know!
- Monitor closely. At Spectrum Medical Care Center, we screen patients for certain risks before starting anyone on hormones. We frequently monitor patients in the first year to ensure there are no adverse reactions and lab results are within safe ranges. Follow-up care is also important to assess your comfort with the transition as well as the social impact and social support you’re experiencing.
- Some changes are permanent, some temporary. For transmasculine individuals going on testosterone, they’ll experience these permanent changes: deepened voice, clitoral enlargement (also known as bottom growth), more body, facial hair, and male pattern baldness. Reversible changes include cessation of menses, increased muscle mass and strength, body fat redistribution, and skin oiliness or acne. For those going on estrogen therapy, the most permanent change is breast growth. Feminizing hormone therapy can also cause atrophy (shrinkage) of the genitals and loss of erectile function that may not be reversible. Estrogen will thin body hair, soften the skin, can increase scalp hair, and decrease muscle mass and strength, all of which are reversible.
- You can’t pick and choose results. Unfortunately, you can’t pick and choose the physical changes you want, which may feel challenging. Some of my patients will say, ‘Okay, ‘I’ve seen the permanent changes I want, and I don’t want it to go any further,’ and so at that point, we stop therapy. Low-dose hormone therapy can slow down the rate of changes, allowing for a more gradual physical transition. We counsel patients in advance about the common changes, and it’s up to the individual as to when they’d like to scale back and determine whether some benefits are worth the potential risks.
- Be aware of risks. Like any medical treatment, there are potential risks involved. Some risks with testosterone therapy include increased red blood cell mass, acne, hypertension, sleep apnea, weight gain, and dyslipidemia (increases the chance of clogged arteries). Cardiovascular disease is likely increased with additional risk factors for testosterone and estrogen therapy. Transfeminine patients going on estrogen therapy may experience weight gain, thromboembolic disease (when a blood clot breaks off and blocks another blood vessel), and a high level of triglycerides in the blood.
