Armour Oaks Senior Living Community in south Kansas City welcomes LGBT residents. Colette Panchot, director of sales and marketing at Armour Oaks, offers this advice:
Seniors in transition
“It is important to pay attention to signs in yourself or your environment that is it time for a change. Many seniors feel comfortable in their homes, but don’t acknowledge that their homes no longer serve them. Having a professional organizer help downsize possessions and a real estate agent prepare a home for sale is the first step. There are real estate professionals who have earned certification in senior issues, and they are especially sensitive to older adults’ needs.”
Healthful living for LGBT seniors
“Each generation is different in how it deals with aging issues. It is still unclear what types of services and living arrangements LGBT baby boomers will demand, but the options for the current generation of seniors are plentiful. Most retirement communities welcome people starting at age 55 to 62, and they do an excellent job addressing residents’ social, physical and spiritual needs. … Good health is our most valuable asset as we age, and protecting it should be job one for every LGBT senior.”
LGBT Senior-Targeted Websites
There is no dearth of LGBT senior-targeted Web pages out there (,, and Navigating these sites can be challenging. Please use caution when searching for senior facts. Consulting with an advocacy group like SAGE (Services & Advocacy for GLBT Elders — is one prudent option.

Nurse Practitioner Ari Kravitz

When I started medical transition at 20 years old, it was very difficult to get the care I needed for hormone replacement therapy because there are very few providers trained in starting hormones for trans people, even though it’s very similar to the hormones that we prescribe to women in menopause or cisgender men with low testosterone.

I hope more providers get trained in LGBTQ+ healthcare, so they can support patients along their individual gender journey, and provide the info needed to make informed decisions about their body. I’ve personally seen my trans patients find hope and experience a better quality of life through hormone replacement therapy.
