JJ's Clubhouse & Bar in St. Louis MO has closed and the owners posted a letter on Facebook relaying the sad news.
"All good things must come to an end, and we are at ours," the post read. "It is with a sad heart to tell you the building has been sold. JJ’s will close on June 17th, 2021.
It has been a pleasure to serve as the home bar to the Show Me Bears and Blue Max CC Leather for the greater part of 20 years and Gateway MC (2013)."
The bar was known to be a welcoming home away from home to the bear and leather community, holding the Mr. Missouri Leather and Mr. Heartland Bear and other events there for numerous years.
Riverfront Times described JJ's in a listing:
Tucked away in a dimly lit building under a highway close to the Grove strip, JJ's Clubhouse has the feel of a hideout -- or at least an insiders' secret playland. The city's resident all-gay male "bear leather" bar offers pool, popcorn and pinball, and the friendly bartenders, adorned in strapping bondage vests, are always happy to pour their specialty shot of "Kactus Juice." Special weekly events include dart night and butch night, in which patrons come dressed in their best. Who knows? You could get lucky and stumble into JJ's during their annual HiBearNation convention, in which the downstairs dance floor is flooded with cheery Bears from all across the nation. If that statement incites fear, JJ's might not be the place for you. JJ's is a friendly bar for males with an open mind, and if you're up for that, it guarantees a gay old time.
In their Facebook post, Jeff and Jerry continued:
"To all the bears, leather brothers and sisters and the LGBTQ community of St. Louis and the surrounding areas, thanks for making us one of of top 5 bear bars in the world, as well as Pantheon Awards and others that we were lucky to receive along the way. We will cherish them forever. It has been a fun and interesting ride; a lot of ups and downs from our wedding with family and friends to Pride floods and a pandemic.
There will be a formal thank you letter in time mentioning many of you, but we wanted to take a minute to say thanks so very much to current staff and friends and clients. We would like to thank you for 21 years of love and friendship.
Out of the ashes something will rise."
It is not yet apparent if, when or where a new JJ's Clubhouse & Bar will open. Follow JJ's on Facebook for updates.
